Understanding amfori BSCI Audits in Clothing Manufacturing

If you sell into the EU or UK, “is your factory audited?” shows up early in onboarding. amfori BSCI is one of the most requested social-compliance audits — and one of the most misunderstood. Here is what it covers, how to verify a claim, and what it does not prove.

The short version

  • BSCI audits working conditions, not product quality.
  • Identify the audited business and site and review the applicable audit report and current status.
  • It does not test fabric, construction or colourfastness.
  • Use it to shortlist; qualify quality separately.

What BSCI actually is

BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), run by amfori, audits a factory’s social performance: working hours, wages, health and safety, child and forced labour, freedom of association, and environmental practice. The monitoring report identifies the business and audited site and records its assessment; current status and scope should be checked separately.

What the audit covers

  • Working hours and overtime
  • Wage payment and records
  • Health, safety and emergency procedures
  • No child or forced labour
  • Environmental and chemical handling

Why buyers ask for it

Brands carry reputational and legal risk across their supply chain. A verifiable social audit lowers that risk and is often a condition of onboarding, especially for European retailers and marketplaces.

How to verify a claim

Ask for the audit report, identify the audited entity and site, and check the applicable monitoring status through the appropriate amfori platform access. A logo or identification number alone does not establish current status. Our monitoring summary identifies Dongguan Night Clothing Co.,Ltd and a distinct audited site; request the relevant documentation.

What BSCI does not prove

BSCI is not a product-quality mark and not a fabric certification. It does not test garment construction, colourfastness or fibre content. Treat social compliance and product quality as two separate checklists — a factory can pass one and still miss the other.

How to pair it with quality checks

Use BSCI to shortlist, then qualify on product: review a tech pack, approve a sample, and agree an AQL for final inspection. Look at real production, not just paperwork.
